How the calculator works

1

Enter your HTS code

Search by product or paste your 10-digit code directly. DutyDesk loads the current base duty and Section 301 status automatically.

2

Add your costs

Enter product cost, freight, and insurance. DutyDesk computes the CIF value and applies duties to it, matching how CBP calculates your bill at the border.

3

Get a full breakdown

See base duty, Section 301 tariff, AD/CVD, and total landed cost per unit — with each component shown separately so you can identify where your costs are coming from.

4

Watch for changes

Add the product to your watchlist. DutyDesk will re-run the calculation and email you if the duty rate changes on any future shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is landed cost?

Landed cost is the total cost to get a product from the manufacturer to your door in the United States. It includes the product cost, international freight, insurance, U.S. customs duties (base rate + Section 301 + AD/CVD), and sometimes port handling fees. It represents your true unit cost before domestic distribution.

What duty components does the landed cost calculator include?

DutyDesk calculates three duty layers: (1) base duty rate from the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTSUS), applied to the CIF value of the shipment; (2) Section 301 additional tariff if the product originates from China; (3) antidumping (AD) or countervailing duty (CVD) if a trade order applies to your HTS code. The calculator shows each layer separately so you understand your total duty burden.

What is CIF value and why does it matter?

CIF stands for Cost + Insurance + Freight. U.S. Customs calculates duties on the CIF value of an import — meaning your customs duty is based on the product cost plus the cost to ship it to the U.S. border, plus insurance. DutyDesk uses CIF value automatically when computing your landed cost estimate.

Does landed cost change when tariff rates change?

Yes — and this is the core reason to use DutyDesk. When Section 301 rates change (as they did multiple times from 2018 to 2025), your landed cost changes immediately on every future shipment. DutyDesk monitors rate changes every 6 hours and recalculates your product landed costs automatically when a new rate takes effect.
